Homeopathy, also known as homeopathic medicine, is an alternative medical system that originated in Germany over 200 years ago. Homeopathy is based on two unconventional theories – “like cures like” and the “law of minimum dose.” “Like cures like” is the idea that a disease can be cured by a substance that elicits the same kinds of symptoms in healthy people, such as taking snake venom or cure a poisonous bite. The “law of minimum dose” is based on the idea that the lower the dose of a medication, the greater its effectiveness. So that snake venom you take would be extremely diluted before you took it to cure your poisonous bite. However, many homeopathic remedies are either so diluted that no molecules of the original substance can be found in them or they are not diluted enough and can interact with drugs or cause other side effects.1
Homeopathic remedies can be created from many substances, such as those from animals, plants, or minerals, and they are often formulated as sugar pellets to dissolve under your tongue. They can also come as tablets, drops, gels, creams, or ointments. Like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), homeopathy follows an individualized approach for each person, so people with a similar condition may each receive a different type of treatment.1
Dr. Pulley is not a homeopathic practitioner, but she offers services that homeopathy are similar to. Dr. Pulley is a licensed acupuncturist who can provide acupuncture and Eastern dietary therapy recommendations to address your condition, or she also provides an herbal consult using Western herbs if that is an approach you would prefer.
