About Massage Therapy

Massage is a hands-on approach to health and wellness that involves a bodywork practitioner who uses their hands, elbows, hot stones, instruments, or a combination to work your body’s tight muscles. The goal of massage is to loosen your muscles to provide relief from a variety of conditions. Oftentimes muscles can become tight due to stress, so a massage can be very effective for stress-related muscle tightness and soreness. Muscles can also become tight due to your spinal bones becoming misaligned, so chiropractic and massage are complementary approaches that can help correct the underlying root of your condition more quickly.

Massage has been used for thousands of years because it can be very effective. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is known as tui na or bodywork (which includes bone-setting). Shiatsu massage is a Japanese type of massage based on TCM that has also been around for thousands of years.

Some benefits of massage include:1

  •     Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion.
  •     Assist with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers and shorten maternity hospital stays.
  •     Ease medication dependence.
  •     Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body's natural defense system.
  •     Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.
  •     Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts.
  •     Improve the condition of the body's largest organ—the skin.
  •     Increase joint flexibility.
  •     Lessen depression and anxiety.
  •     Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.
  •     Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation.
  •     Reduce postsurgery adhesions and swelling.
  •     Reduce spasms and cramping.
  •     Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles.
  •     Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body's natural painkiller.
  •     Relieve migraine pain.

Dr. Pulley can provide tui na as part of an acupuncture treatment if you are interested in Traditional Chinese bodywork. Call to book an appointment today at 978-237-5106.
