Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine is a holistic systems biology-based approach used to identify and address the root cause of disease, rather than just treating the symptoms.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, which includes acupuncture, has been using this kind of approach for thousands of years; hence its success with hard to diagnose conditions or those health issues that Western medicine struggles to treat.

Many people are challenged by Western medicine (aka, the traditional medical system in the US) because it tends to be symptoms-based and segmented. Your foot hurts – go to the foot doctor. You get chronic sinus infections – go to the EENT. You have high blood pressure – go to the cardiologist. The problem with this approach is that it can be difficult, if not impossible, to get to the root cause of your problem because no one is taking a step back to look at the bigger picture.

Alternative medicine, such as chiropractic and acupuncture, pride themselves at looking at the bigger picture to get to the root cause of your health issues. For example, if you told your chiropractor that your foot hurts, she would check out your whole posture. She knows from training and experience that everything is connected, so we need to evaluate all of it. Let’s say your foot pain is due to your knee being twisted inward because your low back is overly curved. If that’s the case, just treating your foot would never get to the root cause – your low back!

Practitioners of Functional Medicine take the same kind of holistic approach where we evaluate your whole body because your body is a synchronous unit, not a bunch of segments pieced together.

A Functional Medicine evaluation is comprehensive in order to get to the root of your health concerns. Dr. Pulley uses a combination of history, exam, Systems Survey, HSR, and muscle testing to form a diagnosis. If necessary, she can also order laboratory tests. Those who want to find out even more about their bodies can do DNA testing and a BrainSpan test for an additional fee.

Then Dr. Pulley will recommend a treatment plan that can include dietary changes, herbal medicine, and whole food supplementation to help your body return to balance in a natural, safe, and effective way. She primarily recommends Standard Process and MediHerb products since they are among the highest quality supplements and herbal products available. It is crucial to obtain high quality products for your journey to wellness because supplements and herbs are not regulated well in the United States, which can lead to many issues with quality such as a product being contaminated with allergens (such as gluten or peanuts) or not containing the herbs listed or in the quantities claimed.
